Asante Kotoko Player Ratings vs Al Hilal – Ratings As Expected After Another Porcupines Defeat

Asante Kotoko SC endured a checkered start to the game by Al Hilal and were pinned into a defensive unit for the major part of the opening half that saw some few chances getting wasted at both ends.

A lone goal from Viny won the game for the Sudanese side ahead of the return leg slated for January 5-6, 2021 on Omdurman.

Here’s how Johnson Smith’s side rated at the Accra Sports Stadium…

Razak Abalora – 5/10

Had hardly anything to do in the entire match as Al Hilal were content to sit deep and soak up the pressure and there was nothing the Black Stars goalkeeper could do about Hilla’s goal in the second half. Distribution from the back left a lot to be desired.

Christopher Nettey – 5/10

Neat and tidy, his versatility and intellect is such an asset for Asante Kotoko. He is a perfectly serviceable player but he and Emmanuel Gyamfi have less chemistry than a puddle of water. The opening period of the second half was much improved but it was so short-lived it’s already forgotten about. No penetration at all.

Imoro Ibrahim – 5/10

Another showing of passion and determination but one that lacked teammates to make his contributions worthwhile. The only full-back on the pitch capable of beating his man and whipping a delivery in.

Abdul Ganiu – 5.5/10

Played a few wayward passes at stages that caused some panic, but he cleared all the balls that came into the box and made some decisive blocks.

Wahab Adams – 4.5/10

Didn’t do too badly against the physically imposing Al Hilal forwards, yet his decisions off the ball left something to be desired: came short when he shouldn’t have and didn’t push up when he should have. Did make some good blocks and clearances, however.

Adom Frimpong – 3.5/10

Started the season in great form but has really tailed off in recent weeks. Another disappointing game where he allowed Al Hilal to go straight through the middle on far too many occasions. Adom is playing out of necessity at the minute, but there has been plenty of recent evidence why his not the answer for Kotoko defensively.

Latif Anabila – 2.5/10

Like his midfield partner, it’s been a tough run of games for the former Ashgold man. Anabila  is frustrating to watch as it’s clear there’s a talented player in there, but he just hasn’t shown it yet in the Porcupines jersey since his arrival. Due to injuries, he will probably start the next game though, which says a lot about Kotoko’s current squad depth.

Emmanuel Gyamfi – 3/10

Given a start once again despite his sluggish performances in recent games, the captain did not lack for effort or endeavour but once again lacked the end product. While he may have played two key passes, Gyamfi just completed none of his 5 attempted crosses and lost possession 7 times.

Godfred Asiamah – 4/10

Looked the brightest of the Asante Kotoko attackers in the afternoon, although that is not saying much. Showed some good link-up with Imoro on the left. Completed one key pass and two dribbles, but lost the ball nine times before he was taken off for Osman Ibrahim.

William Opoku Mensah – 3.5/10

Starting in the hole behind the striker, Opoku Mensah was sloppy with his distribution in the final third, completing just 45 per cent of his passes in the afternoon. Had a header saved by the Al Hilal keeper in the second half. It was surprising to see his play the entire duration.

Kwame Opoku – 4.5/10

The Asante Kotoko target man was much more involved than he has been in recent games but still could not make the difference for his side.

You can’t knock him for not trying. Even if little came off, he harassed and hounded down the ball, pressing from the front, yet he was once again starved of anything through the middle.

Subs:

Osman Ibrahim – 4.5/10

Tried to up the tempo after his involvement through riskier moves on the ball and passes in behind. Not all came off but he brought urgency.

Muniru Sulley – 4/10

Replaced Emmanuel Gyamfi with just under 16 minutes to play. Muniru certainly has qualities that Asante Kotoko are lacking and is worthy of more minutes moving forward. Though, his error led to the goal scored by Al Hilal.

Naby Keita – 4/10

With the game effectively finished, Keita got the minutes he deserved. Similarly to Muniru, the striker looked bright and his return to the side will be a major boost for the club going forward.

There is no rest for the weary. The games come thick and fast this time of year. Medeama will be the visitors at the Akoon Park on Sunday. It is yet another ‘must-win’ game for the club.
