Former Ghana international Augustine Ahinful has called for collective support from Ghanaians as the Black Stars chase their first AFCON trophy in 37 years.
The retired Ghanaian pleaded the football fraternity to screen the players from negative reports and rally behind the team as the team gear up for continental crown.
Having last won the AFCON in 1982, the Black Stars have failed to lay hands on the crown, losing 2 finals and the last 6 editions.
Speaking on New Mercury FM ahead of the Black Stars opener against the Squirrels of Benin, Augustine Ahinful called for serene atmosphere around the camp of the Black Stars.
“Let us unite as a country and support the Black Stars as it is done elsewhere. I am always shocked to hear Ghanaians predicting doom for the team. I ask myself are they Ghanaians?, Augustine Ahinful quizzed.
The Black Stars, for the first time in over a decade, are not pretournament favorite thanks to their inconsistent form in the qualification campaign and failure to book a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
