Feature: Wa Suntaa SC, The Orphaned Club With Regional Hope And Burden

When Wa All Stars FC played host to Techiman Eleven Wonders on June 2, 2018, little did the upper west football realize it was the last premier league football match they were enjoying after eleven unforgettable seasons. A 41st minute goal from Maxwell Oppong kept the points at the Wa Park only for the team to emotionally bid a painful goodbye to the Wa Malik Jabir Park. It has been a hectic 3, 829 days of topflight football at the Wa Park after 17 years of blackout.  Upper West Heroes witnessed the likes of Issah Abass as their cult hero but Wa All Stars produced regional icons, territorial heroes and national super stars. Painfully, the then northern pride,  have been moved some 1280 kilometers from the upper west region. Hopes, dreams and all doubt have been put to bed with John Paintsil and his allies taking ownership of the 2016 Ghana Premier league champions.

Rebranded as Wa Suntaa SC on February 2016, the Believers have been burdened with the responsibility of reviving football in the region. They have been consistently dominant at the regional level but will now have add Brong Ahafo region, Northern region and upper East region to their casualties to bring topflight football to the region. “It might be too dangerous to demand too much from them at this foetal stages of their transformation but why can’t we demand promotion from a club that have enjoyed 19 games unbeaten run, scored 74 goals in 27 matches on the road and posted 14 clean sheets in their 19 magical game spell?”

Headed by Ghana’s most underrated tactician, Abdul Aziz Kandumah John, Wa Suntaa SC needed no introduction on the Ghanaian terrain. International recognition from nike saw them joining the kit manufacturing firm in a one year deal. Club president, Daud Arif, have succeeded in networking the club on the virtual realm with partnership deal both home and abroad. The brand Suntaa SC, resonates across northern Ghana thanks to the array of players paraded and refined by their head coach. The golden generation of Votere Denis, Micheal Frimpong Dwamena, Kyei Baffuor, Kanyiri Samad Alonso, Ushau Busquetes Abu, Baba Goro Abdulai, Osman Salifu, Yakubu NUhu Azar and Musah Mohammed Toure, swept all before then with ease. Dolimon FC will be the best team to explain the ruthless nature of this club after conceding 5 goals in 34 minutes against the Beleivers. Savanah FC in the MTN FA Cup had their share of the rampant nature of Suntaa SC at the Tamale Stadium thanks to the 8 goals ceded. The club had quality, then.

With majority of the stars of club’s known faces leaving the club for pastures anew, the captaincy of the club have been handed to Kanyiri Samad Alonso, at least in the off season matches so far. The impregnable midfield that toyed with opposition in the division one league, MTN FA Cup, NC Special Competition and Wa Naa Cup, have all left, leaving the highly committed Alonso with a lot to do.

Club President: Daud Arif Brown

Judging the club by its nickname and on field perseverance, fans in the upper west region have every reason to believe in the Believers in their quest to seal topflight football. The current off season play pattern, new faces, match results and preparations, all suggested and confirmed that, Wa Suntaa SC, with REGIONAL SUPPORT can pull a LEICESTER CITY at the end of the 2019/20 season. The bony and skeletal nature of the club president, Daud Arif, belittled the exponential growth of the club within the three calendar years of reformation from then Crystal Palace FC.

As denizen of the region, I have the chance to watch nearly 90 percent of their home matches in five different competitions in 3 years. If the club have one thing needed by football club, it is the MASSIVE FOLLOWERS. This a division club that fill the Wa Park with low key publicity to match. The club have the potential to resurrect football fans and generate excitement from Babile to Hain, Piisi to Ullo and Singbakpong to Manwe. The support base has regional color devoid of any ethical, tribal or other such fragments on match days.

With no topflight football ahead of the December 28, 2019 season openers, the average football fan in the region have no option than to rally behind them as the quest to replace Wa All Stars FC takes off. If any club in the upper west region can seal qualification to the topflight in Ghana, then the name must Wa Suntaa SC. In Wa Suntaa SC, the management board believed it is possible, the player think it is possible, some fans believe it is possible and the region now believe they can do it.
