GPL Match-Week 1 Preview: Hearts of Oak open 2021-22 Campaign in Accra Derby with Legon Cities

Accra Hearts of Oak sporting club will open their 2021-22 Ghana Premier League campaign with a Sunday afternoon derby agaisnt city rivals Legon Cities FC at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The reigning Ghanaian champions begin their title defense agaisnt the mega-rich Legon Cities who will seek to improve on their performance from last season.
The Phobians returned to early pre-seaeon due to their involvement in the CAF Champions League.
Although, Hearts of Oak are out of Africa’s Premier club football competition, their hopes of playing continental competition is still intact as they’ve been demoted to the CAF Confederations Cup.
Hearts of Oak have been drawn agaisnt Algerian side JS Saoura in the second round play-off of CAF’s second tier conpetetion.
The Accra based side will use their opening games in the Ghana Premier League as preparatory matches to spur them on in the quest to maintain their place among the African elite.
To do that however, they have to deal with their immediate opponent in Legon Cities, who themselves are seeking on transforming their brand image into performance on the pitch.
With a new but experienced technical team led by former League winner Maxwell Konadu in place, you won’t bet against them causing an upset.
Meanwhile, both Hearts of Oak and Legon Cities have beefed up their squad with new players.
Where as the new Phobians have had opportunity to showcase their skills in the CAF Champions League, Cities’ new recruits will be on display for the first time in this afternoon’s game.
