Association football is a collective team work usually monopolized by glamorous footballers or match winning saves from goal keepers.
The media lenses are usually hijacked by players with quick feet, unrealistic goal scorers or nimble footed dribblers at the expense of the real game changers.
From the equipment officer to the club’s masseur, field workers to the dieticians, the media might be unfairly hash on the technical brains behind what we see on the pitch.
Ahead of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League, football fans across the country are set to witness some new faces in the Ghanaian top tier, notably amongst them will be Abdulai Samad and Junior Alipio of Medeama SC.
The duo joins from Wa Suntaa SC to continue the long chain of churning out talented footballers on yearly basis.
In the upper west region, the name Kandumah Abdul Aziz John, is synonymous to legendary coaching and player management.
The CAF License C holder topped a list of fine tacticians in the region led by his numerous accolades both at the club level and schools sports.
He won gold, silver and bronze with various categories of school sports capped by the triumphant trip to Bolga.
Under his tenure as Wa Suntaa SC trainer, the tactically endowed John assembled the best ever division II side ever at the regional level.
From Votere Denis in post all the way to Aminu Rafique up front, their 19-game unbeaten run sums up the quality of footballers put together.
The holy trinity of Abu Ushau, Abdulai Samadu and Micheal Dwamena tortured, decimated and humiliated all obstacles placed before them. They were, simply put, too strong for teams at the region level.
Abu Ushau is currently with Accra Hearts of Oak SC, Micheal Dwamena with WAFA and Samad Abdulai with Medeama SC. They were shaped by an uncelebrated tactician, who unfortunately is based in the northern belt of the country and not accorded the needed respect he so deserves.
Aside the trio mention, Kandumah John is the brain behind the transformation of Ibrahim Hakeem, Salifu Iddrisu, Ibrahim Sadat, Junior Alipio, Osman Goro, and several other stars from the upper west region.
To put his tactical nous into perspective, Kandumah John went 5 years without losing a competitive match at the regional level spanning Wa SUntaa SC and Wa United FC. His last defeat before this season’s play-off setback was against Wa Power SC back in 2016. Iddrisu Abu Polibu ended that run with a 1-0 defeat in the 2021 Middle league play offs with his Yaasin Juniors FC.
To add to his tactical prowess, the professionally trained teacher comes in with undiluted command over English language and tactical interpretations. He must be the Ghanaian version of Trapatoni, Jullian Nagglesman or possibly Arsene Wenger. No wonder he is an Arsenal FC dedicated supporter.
Like most trainers however, this young tactician needs bigger platform to unleash his natural talent in the supreme interest of Ghana football.
If Medeama SC entrusted a club in the stature of the Mauve and Yellows to the then fast emerging Samuel Boadu what prevents other clubs from doing same? He is Abdul Aziz Kandumah John and this name is bound to resonate across Ghana’s football ecosystem in the near future.
