Ghana Premier league side Legon cities, have completed the signing of Ghana’s top striker, Asamoah Gyan in a four year deal that will see rhw 35 year old attacker earn $1 Million, a record in the local transfer history.
The former Sunderland striker who has been clubless after parting ways with Indian club, Northeast united, was initially expected to join Ghanaian giants, Asante kotoko ahead of the 2020/2021 Premier league season. The deal however did not sail through.
In as much as Asamoah Gyan would have wanted to finish a career that has given him so much with the last roll of the dice on home soil with his favourite club Asante Kotoko, he also wanted a club that can match his ambition financially and on the pitch. Reports in the local media says , Kotoko backed off after he demanded a mammoth $400,0000.
Legon cities, unlike kotoko, happens to be in both positions. And as such, has been able to secure his signature after fruitful negotiations between Gyan, Board Chairman of legon and Lemla Group Mr. Richard Kings Atikpo.
While many football fanatics believe the amount is outrageous, others are of the view that looking at Asamoah Gyan’s pedigree in football, he deserves that and more.
Asamoah Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana senior nation team, the black stars, with 51 goals to his name.
Having represented the Black Stars of Ghana at the Fifa world cup in 2006,2010 and 2014, Gyan made sure he left an indelible mark at the mundial. He is the top African goalscorer at the world cup, with 6 goals.
Gyan will add further allure and appeal to the well branded and neatly packaged Legon Cities Football club commercially.
