Striker Hafiz Wontah Konkoni’s 26th minute goal was enough to separate Bechem United and academy boys WAFA SC at the Nana Fosu Gyarbour park, in their week 2 Ghana Premier League match.
WAFA SC started the game with some high pressing into their opponents area, in a bid to destabilize their defence in an attempt to get the first goal of the day with Daniel Lomotey leading the charge, and supported by young and dynamic Forson Amankwah.
Bechem United reacted to the threat with a ‘pinch of salt’ with Kofi Agbesimah and Charles Amponsah Mensah standing firm to coil all attempts to break their back.
Bechem United managed to calm tempers by introducing a more radical approach to the game, in effect, they had Mohammed Adamu to fall deep into defence to support the back, which worked out, but before this, Forson Amankwah had his 20 yards shot pushed over the bar by goalkeeper Daniel Afadzwo in goal for Bechem. The resulting corner kick was decisively dealt with by the Bechem United defence.
Sensing that their opponents wer gaining more confidence, coach Seth Osei Wire opened up play, allowing Hafiz Konkoni, and Charles Mensah to play wide in a move to open up the WAFA defence.
The New style seemed to have been positive for Bechem United who got more players into the opposing half.
In the 27th minute, striker Hafiz Konkoni latched onto a cross from the left flank, out jumped his marker Konadu Yiadom to score from close range.
Bechem United intensified their play after the game, opening up the defence of WAFA in an attempt to get the second goal of the match, but the academy boys help on to play to take the game to half time.
WAFA SC returned to the second half looking for spaces to get the equalizer, piling pressure on the home side.
In the early exchanges, WAFA SC was awarded a free kick right on the edge of the penalty box, but Forson AMankwah’s curling shot went wide off the post.
At this stage, both coaches felt the need to introduce fresh limbs to support their course, Dr. Prosper Nartey brought on Eric Asimanyi for Forson AMankwah while Seth Osei Wire introduced Clinton Doudu for Emmanuel Boakye Owusu with 30 minutes to go.
WAFA SC, looking desperate for the equalizer resorted to long balls behind the defence of Bechem United, but Kofi Agbesimah, and Charles Bosompem AMponsah were clever in detecting the new approach of the opponent.
Bechem United, not satisfied with the 1-0 lead brought on Prince Adu Kwabena, who became an instant hit with his surging runs in the opponents goal area.
Both sides labored in vain but could not get the needed goal for referee to end the game with Bechem running home with a 1-0 victory
