The Black Stars of Ghana ended their 2019 AFCON tournament after crushing out through the penalty shootout to Tunisia after a 120 minutes thrilling encounter in Ismailia.
Both Countries went into the game with the high intention of beating each other, and opened the game fiercely contesting each other, however, Ghana was the most aggressive of the two team, showing clear signs of opening the scores in the first 15 minutes of the game.
The Cartage Eagles, sensing the threat posed by their opponents, retreated by sending more men into defence.
The pressure from the Black Stars resulted into three corner kicks before the 20th minute mark, and creating clear goal scoring opportunities.
One of Ghana’s best chances came to the way of Nuhu Kasim who rose high to connect with the ball from a Mubarak Wakaso corner kick inside the six-yard box, but his decent header only hits the left post and ricocheted away, Andre Ayew) picked up the rebound after chaos in the box and directed a sweet strike towards the left post, but the goalkeeper, however, denied him with a stunning save.
Ghana came close to scoring again in the 41st minute when Afriyie Acquah got a rebound on the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot towards the right side of the goal, but Mouez Hassen got a hand to it and kept it out, the ball went out of play for a corner kick to the Black Stars.
Perhaps the most controversial decision of the game came in the 43rd minute when Referee Victor Miguel de Freitas Gomes disallowed what seemed a perfected goal from Andre Ayew, when he connected a low cross from Jordan Ayew in the box, Thomas Partey was adjudged to have handled the ball earlier on.
Back into the second half and Ghana continued to press for that all important goal, in the 53rd minute, Jordan Ayew produced a clever header from around the penalty spot, but was stopped by one of the defending players of Tunisia to win Ghana a corner.
The Cartage Eagles of Tunisia came close when Taha Khenissi controlled a fine pass into the box and took a shot to the bottom left corner, but an Kasim Nuhu had a final clearance for a corner Kick.
Tunisia with pressure on the Black Stars, came close to scoring again when Taha Khenissi rose high again to connect with a cross from the corner kick, but his powerful header from near the penalty spot crashed against the crossbar.
Taha Khenissi and his Tunisian attack continued searching for goal, and in the 73rd minute, He produced a superb finish after connecting with a cross and unleashed a first-time volley towards goal that goes in off the right post for the first goal of the day for the Cartage Eagles.
Coach Kwesi Appiah threw in two Attackers with Asamoah Gyan, and Caleb Ekuban coming on to replace Captain Andre Ayew, and Afriyie Acquah.
Mubarak Wakaso came close again and didn’t hesitate to shoot from around the penalty spot and aimed towards the left side of the target, Goalkeeper Mouez Hassen was alert, made a superb save and parried the ball onto the post, Ghana forced a corner.
with time running out of the Ghanaians, Tunisian Coach Alain Giresse has substituted the goal scorer, Taha Khenissi and replaced with Rami Bedoui , the substitution didn’t go the way of the Tunisians as Rami Bedoui whipped in an own goal for Ghana, when he headed home a free kick from Mubarak Wakaso, throwing the game into Extra time.
The Extra time of the game became more tense as both sides playing cautiously to prevent their opponents from causing and havoc, taken the game to Penalty Shoot outs.
In the shootout, Caleb Ekuban missed his kick, with all others scoring for the fairy tale story of the Black Stars at the AFCON to come to an end.
