Swindon Town Coach Confident of Wallacott’s Black Stars Status Ahead of January AFCON

Head Coach of Swindon Town Football Club, Ben Garner expects goalkeeper Jojo Wallacott to be a starter for Ghana in next year’s African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Wallacott, 25, made his debut for the Black Stars  in October 2021 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Zimbabwe.

He has since featured in four games for Ghana, keeping two clean sheets in the process.

Speaking on how the English fourth-tier club will deal with Wollacott’s absence in January 2022 for the Afcon, Garner said his goalkeeper deserves to be Ghana’s number.

“I would say that we probably will be without Jojo,” he said.

“He’s gone away and done really well for his country, he’s played the last four games and kept a clean sheet in the last one against South Africa.

“That’s brilliant for Jojo to get that international recognition, and it’s pride for him and his family.
“I would fully expect him to not only be called up in January but to start each game based on what he’s done.

“We’re well aware of that situation, and we’re planning in advance.

“As I’ve said from day one, we’re very, very fortunate to have two fantastic goalkeepers – both deserve to be number one – and I do mean that.

“We definitely need to look at options in terms of bringing in a bit of cover for when Jojo does go away.”

Jojo Wollacott got the opportunity to start for the Black Stars in the absence of injured number one goalkeeper Richard Ofori.
