Usually overshadowed by the colleagues in the attacking department, the domestic league witnessed some world class central defenders across the 2020/21 Ghana Premier league led by the lanky Ismail Abdul Ganiu.
The list of top five defenders in the Ghana Premier League, arranged in no certain order is seen below:
Ismail Abdul Ganiu –Asante Kotoko SC
Ismail Abdul Ganiu is usually described as the best defender on the local scene dating back to his days at Wa All Stars FC , Karela United FC and his current form with Asante Kotoko SC.
The composed defender has played across the entire back four and is very much seen as the face of the local league thanks to his abilities aerially and on the local. Ganiu scored four goals last season to cap his dominance on the local league.
Rashid Mohammed –Techiman Eleven Wonders FC
The Techiman Eleven Wonders skipper defied the odds to rise in stature with classic defending all season. Series of man of the match awards rerouted the media lenses towards Rashid Mohammed leading a brief trial in the Egyptian Premier league. His ability to start attack from the back sums up his growth in the game. He remains one of the few players on the local on the eyes of the Black Stars trainer, Milovan Rajevac.
Mohammed Alhassan –Accra Hearts of Oak SC
The confidence with which Mo Alhassan plays belies a home based defender with consistent defense splitting passes as a traditional centre back. Mohammed Alhassan found a niche on the pitch with sensational passing accuracy as a centre back thanks to hi s Academy background. His recent performance against WAC is a summary of how good Mo Alhassan has been for the last calendar year.
Robert Addo Sowah – Accra Hearts of Oak SC
It is rather too surprising not to hear media hype for the most consistent Accra Hearts of Oak SC player for the last soccer season. Call him Mr. reliable and Mr. versatile and you will be 100% correct. Robert Addo Sowah cleanses the backline line like an incinerator and is the reason why Accra Hearts of Oak SC won several games by tight margins. He reads the ball and the movement of the distributor and the intended recipient.
Haruna Jamaldeen –Accra Great Olympics FC
A call into the Black Stars for the trip to South Africa confirms the rise in stature of Haruna Jamaldeen. His lanky nature added to his ball joggling skills as a centre back in what has been identified by the national team handlers. Haruna Jamaldeen shook off competition from the chasing pack to pick a place in the best home base defenders for the past domestic season.
