TOTAL Women’s AFCON 2018: GHANA 1-2 MALI-Bashira’s Double Dethrones Wasteful Queens

The eaglets of Mali recorded a stunning 2-1 triumph over the Black Queens of Ghana to revive their 2018 African women’s cup of Nations after the opening day defeat at the hands of Cameroon.

A brace from Toure Bashira made light work of Elizabeth Addo’s second half penalty in the poor officiated game at the Accra Sports stadium.

Bashiru Hayford’s side made a perfect start to the game but profligate shootings and lack of confidence in the final third denied them an opener before a hugely contentious spot kick handed Mali the chance to go ahead half way into the opening 45 minutes.

Black Queens goal keeper was wrongly adjudged to have fouled Toure Bashira inside the penalty box and the lanky attacker kept her composure to slot home the opener from the 12 yards.

It was a lead they protected with resolute defending and poor shooting skills from the Ghanaian side as the two teams went into recess separated by that lone strike from Toure Bashira.

The start of the second half barely witnessed any improved officiating with the Ghanaian team raising the red flags on most the referee’s decisions.

Head coach of the Black Queens, replaced Priscilla Okyere with Elizabeth Addo just past the hour mark and the substation proved to be magical with the latter earning and scoring a spot kick to level matter with 20 minutes to play.

The lead however barely last 3 minutes before Bashira feasted on a goalkeeping hauler to restore the lead for the Eaglets of Mali from a delicious free kick.

Mali sat back and soaked the pressure for the last 15 minutes despite the avalanche of shots faced from their Ghanaian opposition.

It ended 2-1 and handed Mali their first win of the competition whiles Bashiru Hayford and his Black Queens team will need to beat Cameroon to confirm their ticket in the next stage of the tournament.
