Why nominate ‘Unlicensed’ Assistant, Johnson Smith For Coach of the Month award…….when there is a head.

Johnson Smith Kotoko 650x501 - Why nominate 'Unlicensed' Assistant, Johnson Smith For Coach of the Month award.......when there is a head.

The Ghana Football Association’s nomination of Asante Kotoko’s ‘unlicensed’ Assistant coach Johnson Smith as one of the four persons for the title of coach of the month of the Ghana Premier league for January, contravenes regulation 12[1][a] of the Ghana FA club regulations that requires every Premier league club to have a ‘qualified’ coach to run the club’s technical department.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Ckub Licensing regulations says;
[12.1 TECHNICAL PERSONNEL
a. A Coach with a minimum of CAF A Coaching license or its equivalent for the first team]

On the 18th of December when Asante Kotoko management sacked then head coach, Maxwell Konadu, the club issued two separate communications, one to the Public, and the other to the Clhb Licensing board.

In its communication to the public, the club said, “Management of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club wishes to inform the general public that it has decided to part ways with Coach Maxwell Konadu as its head coach with immediate effect. Coach Johnson Smith has been appointed to lead the team in the interim,”.

The club however communicated to the club licensing Board that, Abdulai Gazale was going to be the clubs interim head Coach.

It is a case of ‘a different coach on the board room, and a different coach on the touchlines.

Even though the Club Licensing regulations do not allow for interim coaching Portfolio, its been over 50 days since the communication, and Asante Kotoko still maintains its initial interim appointment.

The shock of this measures stems from the fact that the Ghana FA seem to legitimize the breach of the Club Licensing regulations by nominating the Assistant coach of the club Johnson Smith, whose current designation at the club Licensing board remain Assistant coach.

On what bases does the Premier league board recognize Johnson smith ahead of Abdulai Gazale, who is officially the club’s Interim head Coach. ?

The Premier league coach cannot assume that Mr Smith is the head coach becuase he ‘stands on the touchlines’.

Abdulai Gazale 650x503 - Why nominate 'Unlicensed' Assistant, Johnson Smith For Coach of the Month award.......when there is a head.

Beyond the non recognition of Abdulai Gazale as the interim head coach of the club, the Ghana FA cannot award a coach who does not qualify to handle a Premier league club, especially when the club have communicated clearly on its technical direction.

If the Premier league board believes the performance of Asante Kotoko is impressive and deserves a nominee, it should be given the the interim head coach of the club and not the Assistant coach who is usually seen on the touchlines.

Accepting the Nomination if Johnson Smith as the coach of the month is clearly undermining the Club Licensing regulations, and a disrespect to the interim Head coach of the club.

If the Premier league board and the Club Licensing board goes ahead to approve the nomination of Johnson smith for the coach of the month, they would have no moral right in demanding that other clubs employ Coaches with CAF License A or its Equivalent fir their team A’s, at the moment, Johnson Smith holds a CAF License B certificate, which does not give him right to handle the team A of a Ghana Premier league club.

We look forward to the future with this decision.
